Heritage and character converge in a Huichol tribal tradition that evokes the legendary party of Barrabás.

This festival is celebrated during the Holy Week in the Northern Sierra Huichola in Huejuquilla el Alto, Jalisco.

On Good Friday, people take out Barrabás who has decorated his body with colorful designs.

A "Tuft" made with strips of paper and izte is tied to his head together with a blanket exuding mythical aura.

Upon leaving, Barrabás plunges into a heap of Jaral's branches, then rises angrily beating everyone with those branches. He throws oranges and whatever it is within his reach at everybody. While starting his journey to the Hill of Barrabás where he tries to hide and escape.

The people chase him. He is cornered at a tree where he is captured and chained. He is then taken to the Cattle Association where he begins whipping the Bullfighters.

Barrabás and other participants at this legendary festive party, ingest a very strong drink made with tepe curtido and peyote. Typical of the region.
